In later times the Villa of L. Herius Florus or Lucius Herennius Florus.

Part :     1        2        3        4        5        6        7        8       Plan

The peristyle E (Barnabei, p.21-35)

According to Jashemski, [she described this as Garden B],

The passageway led to the portico of a peristyle garden enclosed on four sides by twenty white stuccoed columns.

Barnabei’s plan shows a gutter around the edge of the garden.

The four walls of the portico were decorated with a painted colonnade; between the painted columns were magnificent garlands of fruit and flowers.

See Jashemski, W. F., 1993. The Gardens of Pompeii, Volume II: Appendices. New York: Caratzas, (p.286, with plan on p. 285).

According to Barnabei, the peristyle of this house (room E) was much more beautiful and more refined than you could imagine.

The floor was opera signina, with many and vivid colors, which mimicked African marble.

It was outlined at the edge of the walls by a band of white cube mosaics, with strips of black, and from the courtyard by a wide area, from which the columns rose, between the columns was a mosaic decorated with white.

The columns, of the Corinthian order, were three metres and sixty centimetres high, including the capital.

Villa of P Fannius Synistor at Boscoreale. 1900. Peristyle E, south wall east end. Wall painting of Corinthian column with leaves, wheat and pomegranates. The columns that were located in the four corners of the garden, were mirrored in the opposite wall of the peristyle, as many painted columns of the same height, they also were with grooves and with capitals in acanthus leaves, and painted with such naturalness that the columns seemed real. See Barnabei F., 1901. La villa pompeiana di P. Fannio Sinistore. Roma: Accademia dei Lincei. p.23, Fig. 5.

Villa of P Fannius Synistor at Boscoreale. 1900. Peristyle E.
Drawing of cornice, plastered and the gilded on the ceiling of the peristyle.
According to Barnabei, while the rest of the architectural order in this wall was simulated with painting, the cornice was true and real.
This ornate richness, which formed the culmination of the architecture of the portico, was a supremely valuable testimony and a rarity that had no equal.
The imprint of the cornice was retained for a few metres In the thick layer of ash that, diluted by water, penetrated everywhere.
On this imprint remained the gold coating, in which the cornice was covered.
A portion of this gold stuck onto the plaster that was poured into the impression and that now presented a good stretch of that cornice, with two corbels, one of which was nearly complete.
See Barnabei F., 1901. La villa pompeiana di P. Fannio Sinistore. Roma: Accademia dei Lincei. p. 25, Tav. III.
