I.10.11 Pompeii. March 2009. Room 8, remains of central wall painting of Ariadne and Dionysus, from south wall of triclinium.
See Bragantini, de Vos, Badoni, 1981. Pitture e Pavimenti di Pompei, Parte 1. Rome: ICCD. (p.143).
Kuivalainen describes –
“A composition of at least five figures. In the right corner foreground is a reclining female with her face towards the viewer; her yellow cloak covers her legs and is lifted by a cupid, who stands behind her. In the middle, a standing youth watches the sleeping female. Next to him stand two others, one wearing a red cloak down to the hips.”
Kuivalainen comments –
“The foremost figure in the middle is Bacchus, and the one in the red cloak is Silenus. The pictorial programme of the room may concentrate on abandoned lovers, even if a better destiny awaits Ariadne.”
See Kuivalainen, I., 2021. The Portrayal of Pompeian Bacchus. Commentationes Humanarum Litterarum 140. Helsinki: Finnish Society of Sciences and Letters, (p.147, E8).
