Discovery of a human skeleton in the southern vicolo

In order to provide easy access to the house excavated to the west of the cryptoporticus of house no. 2, the excavation of the insula's southern alley was enlarged, and the earthworks carried out resulted in the discovery of a human skeleton, lying supine with its head to the north and its feet to the south, on the back of the easternmost section of the cryptoporticus' southern wall. The few objects carried by this Pompeian, who has now resumed with plaster the attitude of his last hour (fig. 4), are the following:

near the abdomen, an iron key, two small bronze rings perhaps belonging to a leather belt, and a necklace in glass paste, pierced and fluted; on one finger of the left hand, an iron ring, in the bezel of which is a small circular gem engraved with a winged Victory holding a shield, very similar to the Victory on Nero's coins.

A few metres away there is a mutilated marble statuette (0.51 m. high), of which we give a reproduction (fig. 5): it represents a male figure dressed in a knee-length chiton, a cloak and breeches, who stands upright with his legs crossed and, resting his right elbow on his left arm folded across his chest, brings his right hand to his chin. From the Phrygian cap covering his head, two ribbons descend sideways over his shoulders covered by a massive cloak with rather neglected folds. Rinvenimento di uno scheletro umano nel vicolo meridionale

Per dare un comodo accesso alla casa scavata ad ovest del criptoportico della casa n. 2. si è allargato lo scavo del Vicolo meridionale dell'isola; e il movimento di terre eseguito ha provocato, a tergo del più orientale tratto del muro sud del criptoportico, il rinvenimento di uno scheletro umano, giacente supino con la testa a nord e i piedi a sud. I pochi oggetti che recava con sè questo pompeiano. che ha ora col gesso ripreso l'atteggiamento della sua ora estrema (fig. 4). sono i seguenti:

presso l'addome, una chiave di ferro, due anelletti di bronzo forse appartenuti ad una cintura di cuoio, e un corrente di collana in pasta vitrea, forato e baccellato;

ad un dito della mano sinistra, un anello di ferro, nel cui castone è una piccola gemma circolare con l'incisione di una Vittoria alata che regge lo scudo, molto somigli ante alla Vittoria delle monete di Nerone.

A qualche metro di distanza si è poi raccolta la statuetta mutila, di marmo (alta m. 0,51)), della quale diamo la riproduzione (fìg. 5): rappresenta una figura virile vestita di chitone lungo fino alle ginocchia, di mantello e di brache, la quale sta ritta, con le gambe incrociate, e, appoggiando il gomito destro sul braccio sinistro ripiegato sul petto, porta la destra al mento. Dal berretto frigio che copre la testa scendono giù, lateralmente, due nastri sulle spalle coperte di un massiccio manto dalle pieghe alquanto trascurate. Per analoghi motivi statuari, cfr.
