IX.5.6 Pompeii. December 2007. Room u, niche on east wall in garden area.
According to Boyce, Mau measured this arched niche as h.0.31, w.0.39, d.019.
In 1937 Boyce said the niche measured h.0.70, w.0.60, d.0.20.
He felt that such a discrepancy could not be explained by the falling away of the coating of plaster which had left the bricks quite bare.
In front of the niche stood a small masonry altar.
He gave the references – Not. Scavi, 1878, 262; Bull. Inst., 1879, 94; Overbeck-Mau, 290.

IX.5.6 Pompeii. December 2007. Room u, masonry basin with water pipe, to south of room 13 on west wall of garden area. According to both Richardson and Jashemski, near this basin four marble heads were found, including an Epicurus and two other philosophers. See Richardson, L., 1988. Pompeii: an Architectural History. Baltimore: John Hopkins University Press. Jashemski said that three were heads of men, one of a woman. All were of the same marble and excellent workmanship. Mau thought they were to be attached to a wall, Dwyer suggested that they may have been cut to place back-to-back as double herms. Although, under examination he found that no two heads fitted together. The marble heads are now in the Naples Archaeological Museum, inventory numbers 111389, 111390, 111391 and 111392.
See Jashemski, W. F., 1993. The Gardens of Pompeii, Volume II: Appendices. New York: Caratzas. (p.236) According to Pompeii, the richest series of little busts of philosophers was found here, Demosthenes, one alleged to portray Seneca, Epicurus and a woman, perhaps Leontion, the philosopher’s student and companion. See Panetta, M.R. (ed): Pompeii, the history, life and art of the buried city. Italy, White Star Publishers: (p.269)

Cork model

Cork model on display on Naples Archaeological Museum. July 2017.
Looking north from Gladiators Barracks and Theatres at VIII.7 on Via Stabiana, lower right.
Foto Annette Haug, ERC Grant 681269 DÉCOR.
This model in the Naples Archaeological Museum, made of wood, cork and paper, by Felice Padiglione, is scaled at 1/100, and shows the excavations up until the end of 1879.

Many models of the city were produced, including one on display in an exhibition in VIII.2.14/16 in 2018.
That model featured the houses on the western side of VIII.2, that is VIII.2.1/3 the Houses of Championnet, VIII.2.14/16, VIII.2.17/21 the Sarno Baths, and the next few properties on the southern slope.
According to the Archaeological Park of Pompeii display notice in VIII.2.14/16 -
“The cork model was begun in 1865 by Giovanni Padiglione, one of several models predating the great model of the entire city now in Naples Archaeological Museum.
It was created over the course of several stages, following the advance of archaeological discoveries, as demonstrated by the Courtyard of the Moray Eels, excavated at the end of the nineteenth century, and the lower floors of the houses which were investigated in the 1930’s.
In addition, the wall and floor decorations, painted on paper, do not correspond with those that were originally present; most probably it was decided to substitute them with those of a more profound impact from other houses, for educational purposes.”
