VIII.5.16 Pompeii. March 2009. Looking through window of anteroom of room 3. According to Mau, this dining room with an anteroom had an altar for libations. He noted that a fixed altar had been found in only one instance (up until 1893?) in a small dining room in the VIIIth region, at VIII.5.16. The front area of the dining room was set off as an anteroom, and in this was placed an altar of tufa. The other altars found had been small, moveable altars, such as those of terracotta and bronze, often found during excavation. See Mau, A., 1907, translated by Kelsey, F. W., Pompeii: Its Life and Art. New York: Macmillan. (p. 264).
