VII .4.58 Pompeii. Shop with
two rear staircases.

“Si entra in questa per la maggiore delle additate
aperture, la cui soglia era di marmo………
Il pavimento è di mattoni pesti: e rosso è l’intonaco.
Sul lato di fronte di questa bottega trovansi diversi
gradini di una doppia scaletta di fabbrica. La prima di esse piega a sinistra,
comincia dal livello del suolo, e se ne conservano nove scalini che lasciano
sotto di essi una cavita. L’altra che
segue piega pure a sinistra e dopo tre scalini ha un riposo, dal quale di
fronte si ha il passaggio e la discesa nell’atrio, ed incomincia pur la scala a
piegare a sinistra essendone conservati sette scalini. E quindi evidente che
questa due scalette conducevano a diversi siti: e la loro disposizione ne fa
sospettare che la prima conducesse ad una qualche divisione che diremmo ammezzato
(contignatio, tabulatum) e la seconda
al piano superiore dell’edificio.
Nel corpo del muro esterno di questa bottega, e
propriamente nell’angolo che fa colla casa che le è a sinistra, veggonsi i tubi di creta che congiunti tra loro formano il
condotto di un cesso o luogo immondo, la cui apertura era situata nel piano
superiore.”
(“One enters into this shop by the largest of the
openings, whose threshold was of marble..…….
The floor was of mattoni pesti (brick paste): and
the plaster was red.
On the opposite side of this shop several steps of
a double masonry staircase were found. The first of them leads to the left,
starting at ground level, and there are nine steps that leave a recess/opening
below them. The other that follows also leads to the left and after
three steps has a landing/rest, from which facing you, you have the passage and
descent into the atrium, and begins the staircase leading to the left with
seven steps being preserved. It is therefore evident that these two staircases
led to different sites: and their arrangement makes us suspect that the first
led to an area that we would call “mezzanine” (rafters, flooring) and the
second to the upper floor of the building.
In the body of the outer wall, and really in the
corner of this shop, and properly in the corner that is part of the house that it
is on the left of, we see the clay pipes that joined together to form the
conduit of a toilet or unclean place, whose opening was
located in the upper floor.”)
