VI.11.19 Pompeii. Hospitium?

Linked to VI.11.18 and VI.11.20. Excavated 1842. (Area bombed in 1943).

According to Fiorelli –

See Pappalardo, U., 2001. La Descrizione di Pompei per Giuseppe Fiorelli (1875). Napoli: Massa Editore. (p.70).

(This has the entrance corridor between two cubiculums, and a Tuscan atrium with masonry impluvium, decorated internally and externally with white stones: around it there are three puteals, and a fourth is seen at the side of the atrium, where there is also an altar, above which is displayed the painting of the serpents at the sides of the table. On the left are the kitchen with the hearths, the pipes of the toilets descending into the latrine from the upper rooms, area under the stairs used as a storeroom/cupboard, two cubiculums, and the triclinium: on the right two oeci preceded by steps, located in another complex adjacent to the pomerium, with independent exit into the roadway at no. 20. It seems that in the wall with which the house ends, there were more openings, from which they looked into the garden below, whose entrance was in the roadway to the west at no.3.)

According to PPM

"The small house, located at the NE corner of the insula, had a rather unusual plan, even in the regularity of the arrangement of the rooms.

Explored between 1842-1843, it was partly destroyed during the bombing of 1943.

The vestibule, flanked by cubiculums (3) and (12), leads into the atrium that had a masonry impluvium covered with limestone fragments and four cistern mouths; the atrium was not followed by a tablinum but in the rear wall it seems that some windows opened towards the garden (4), of the adjoining complex with entrance at number 3, (VI.11.3), located on a lower level. Found on the right side of the atrium are the two oeci (5) and (6) and the room (4), open to the street and equipped with a staircase to the upper floor that also extended over the rooms of the southern side of the house (7) – (11), as had been deduced from the presence of descending waste-pipes in the latrine attached to the kitchen.

The decoration of the rooms, currently visible, seems to date back to the III and IV Style: a sign of an older phase of use was the short stretch of floor in cocciopesto with decoration of dots, dating back to the II century BC."

VI.11.19 Pompeii. September 2005. Overgrown entrance doorway.
According to Wallace-Hadrill, this was the main entrance to the atrium, at number 18 was the back entrance to the yard, and at number 20 was a workshop with stairs to the upper floor.
Originally there were style III and style IV decorations found in three rooms.

Household altar near east wall of atrium, with doorway to room 12, on left, and to room (11) on right.
According to Boyce, against the east wall of the atrium, to the left of the entrance, stands an altar of tufa*.
This altar was apparently coated with a layer of stucco in the late days of the city.
On the wall above it were painted the two serpents confronted at a painted altar furnished with a pine cone.
See Boyce G. K., 1937. Corpus of the Lararia of Pompeii. Rome: MAAR 14. (p.51, no.188)
* note on page 51 reads – according to Pernice, “the altar dates from the earlier Tufa Period and still stands against the tufa wall where it was originally placed”.
* see Pernice, Hellenistische Tische, 66 and pl. 40,1.
