According to Kuivalainen, who describes the painting as –

“A composition of two standing figures on yellowish terrain against a simple architectural background.

An effeminate youth with fair complexion stands frontally, with his weight on his right foot; in his right hand he holds a thyrsus with a bunch of leaves and a torch-like decoration on the top; ……..”

Kuivalainen then comments –

“Though the pose is customary to practically naked Bacchus leaning on a playing Silenus, the figure would possibly be a hermaphrodite, not Bacchus. This painting had a parallel in room ‘t’ of the House of Caecilius Iuncundus (V.1.26, our room 22). The torch-like thyrsus would be a rarity to Bacchus. It is more common for hermaphrodites and divinities of light.”
