V.3.1 Pompeii. Shop (fullonica?) with steps to an upper floor. Linked to V.3.2.

Excavated 1887-90 and 1902.

Plan from Notizie degli Scavi,1905, vol. 2, p. 203, fig. 1 (dated from December 1902 until March 1905).

Plan from Notizie degli Scavi di Antichità, 1905, vol. 2, p. 203, fig. 1 (dated from December 1902 until March 1905).

The front of this insula pertaining to this building along the Via di Nola was fully excavated between 1887-88.

From December 1901 until December 1902 this insula interior was excavated but with interruptions.

See Notizie degli Scavi di Antichità, 1902, p. 378.

And inside the small fullonica with the entrances at V.3.1 and 2, which occupied the south-west corner of the insula, as well as the finds that were made there, see Notizie degli Scavi 1902, p 209, 381 & 565.

In the workshop Reg. V, Is. III-I, on the 13th, the upset remains of a human skeleton were found, next to which was a group of six or seven coins wrapped in a pocket. Since the fabric of the pocket has been preserved, and the coins are in all probability bronze, it was preferred not to touch them so as not to damage the fabric; not far away were three silver denari coins perhaps escaped from the pocket, unrecognizable due to the oxidisation and a bronze key.

See Notizie degli Scavi di Antichità, 1902, p. 381.

Referring to these Reports, and the plan of the small fullonica mentioned, but not showing the narrow room A, behind the shop No. 1, which was not described by Dott. Paribeni, because it had not yet been excavated, but now clarified for as a rustic room, containing a deposit of cocciopesto, and where they also found a broken amphora and a so-called counterweight of a terracotta frame/loom.

According to CTP, the southern front on the Via di Nola, was first excavated during the Bourbon period, 1839-1841.

Other excavations took place in 1884-1885, 1887-1891, 1901-1902 and 1906-1908.

V.3.1 Pompeii. The door to the closet to the north is now closed, walled up by the Administration, as is the doorway communicating with V.3.2, to the south-east.
