I.11.4 Pompeii. Small shop. Excavated 1913.

 

(Originally when excavated, this was numbered as Reg. II, Insula 1, no.4).

I.11.4 Pompeii. May 2005. Entrance to small shop. According to NSc, a human skeleton was found high up in the ash level on 18th August 1913, in front of number 4. Many coins were found with the skeleton, including 18 silver, 5 large bronze and 43 medium bronze. See Not. Scavi, 1913, pp.309-10, and described as Reg. II, insula 1 davanti n.4.

According to Della Corte, on the pilaster to the right of entrance number 4, above the black zoccolo (plinth), were two programmata,

the first of which recommended L. P(opidium) S(ecundum) L. f(ilium).

High up on the black zoccolo (plinth), to the left of a graffito design representing a rectangular labyrinth, the following inscription, also scratched, could be read -

 

11104 quartio

Quartio va(le) [CIL IV, 8437]
