I.7.7 Pompeii. December 2006. Pseudoperistyle, looking west from east portico. According to Jashemski, the garden was enclosed on the north and east by a portico supported by five columns and two engaged columns. The room on the west side had a large window looking into the garden. Maiuri pointed out that the large tree-root found against the south wall showed that the little garden had been well shaded. The nail holes in the wall indicated that a vine had been carefully trained up the wall. The tree-root cast can be seen half way up the garden next to the wall on the left (0.80 x o.80m at ground level). There was a puteal over the cistern opening in the north-west part of the peristyle. Another puteal was found in the garden. The table (cartibulum) in the garden was decorated with lion heads on one side. The small circular marble base probably held a statuette. According to Boyce, the arched niche was adorned with a stucco aedicula façade and a cornice running around the inside walls. The area of the wall immediately around the niche was painted as part of the decoration, into which the niche was set in a panel. There was no lararium painting and no other indication of religious use. It is called an edicoletta larare in the report and probably was a shrine, as there is none elsewhere in the house. Not.
