II.12.23 Pompeii. July 2009. Marble steps to garden area on west side of triclinium. According to Jashemski, large windows in three rooms had views into the garden, which was to the left, and three steps higher than the atrium. There were four niches in the north wall of the garden. A rectangular niche and the arched niche on each side were about a metre above the ground. A smaller arched niche was high above the central niche. A small round window high in the wall furnished light to the adjacent house. The statues in these niches, which were painted blue inside, would have produced rather a theatrical effect. A blue niche can be seen in the garden area through the triclinium window. Jashemski lists the statues and items found. See Jashemski, W. F., 1993. The Gardens of Pompeii, Volume II: Appendices. VII.12.23 Pompeii. 1959. North wall of garden area, on right. In the west (left) wall was a window with a marble sill. Through the window the north wall of the neighbouring room can be still be seen with a black zoccolo, a blue central panel and red side panels. The upper zone of the wall was faded. The painting in the centre of the blue panel, being protected in vain by a small roof, according to Helbig (H.1281) would have shown Hermes indicating to Paris the arrival of the three goddesses, from which he had to choose the most beautiful.

VII.12.23 Pompeii. c.1879. Painting by Sydney Vacher.
Room to west of garden area, east end of north wall, north-east corner, and east wall which would have had a window into the garden area.
The central painting at the east end of the north wall would have probably showed Ganimede and the eagle (H.156), already in a bad state of conservation in the last century.
Written on the painting are the words “This room is divided into two in length, other half has different frieze, and top cornice lower.”
