VI.13.16 Pompeii. Looking east from corridor in garden area. On the right is the window overlooking the garden area. According to Jashemski, the small garden excavated in 1874 with a covered passageway on the east and north sides. It was located at the rear of house 16 and communicated with the caupona that had its entrance at 17. At the rear of the atrium, instead of the usual tablinum, there was a wide windowed room, which looked out onto the garden. The garden may have been used to serve guests patronizing the caupona.

Water tower at corner of Vico di Mercurio and Vico dei Vettii by VI.13.16

Pipes were being laid at the time of the eruption and a large trench along the north side of the block had been exca¬vated.
There were six pipes of different dimen¬sions, that were to keep the flow even and free of hiccoughs. The water tower or standpipe had a larger channel for pipes on its north face and a smaller one on its south face. It is built against the wall of a house for added support and stands across the pavement. Its pipe channels show heavy deposits of lime from leakage. See Richardson, L., 1988. Pompeii: an Architectural History. Baltimore: John Hopkins University Press. (p.56).
